School Choice Algorithms: Data Infrastructures, Automation, and Inequality

Abstract Automated decision-making is a process in which an algorithm collects and analyses data, derives information, applies this recommends action, at times using forms of Artificial Intelligence (Richardson 2021). This paper proposes that we need to locate automated as part the history educational policy governance, well increasingly networked cultural records or digital archives. As such, explore present decision systems across range spanning several categories: algorithm, AI-based technologies; innovation industry; philanthropy funding; legislation; spatiality socioeconomics; plus, activism, communities. To do so, created interdisciplinary archival heuristic research tool retrace these interrelated shaping data infrastructure inequalities. We then tested context school admission matching New York City. Our central aim help counter discourses about newness efficiencies introducing automation algorithms education reform initiatives. The counter-archiving introduced therefore offers novel intersecting history, present, future systems, such choice algorithms.
